Biography

Brief About Prof. Chima Ariel Onoka

Professor Chima Ariel Onoka is a Community Physician and a Health Systems Economist. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Portharcourt, undertook his residency training at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, and obtained an MSc in Health Policy Planning and a PhD in Health Economics from the University of London.

He has previously served as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, UNN, and Head of Operations of the Health Policy Research Group. He has worked as a consultant for the Federal Ministry of Health, USAID, Axios Foundation, PATHS2 (Abt Associates) and Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria (HERFON). Much of his research work has focused on the policy, financing and implementation processes for universal health coverage initiatives including the equity and efficiency effects, the policy development process for the National Health Insurance Scheme in Nigeria, the role of HMOs, and the systems for the provision of Maternal and Child Health, HIV/AIDS and malaria services. He is adept at using both quantitative and qualitative methods in research.

He was a member of the secretariat for the National Council on Health for several years, and has also served as a sub-theme speaker. He has served as Senior Technical Advisor at the National Primary Health Care Development Agency in Nigeria.
